How I Started My Urban Romance Journey

I know this may be a crazy place to start, but I started my journey into the world of Urban Romance with Demon's Dream x Elle Kayson. I was instantly hooked and devoured that 700-page book in 2 days. Damien “Demon" Montana was the craziest main male character I had read to date, and I was all in. After reading THAT, I didn't know what to read next and had seen Capone x Jahquel J. all over TikTok. I entered the Delgato Universe and have been a fan of Jahquel’s pen ever since.

I think what I love most about the genre is the high stakes and fast-paced storylines. It’s usually not about just falling in love for love’s sake (there is NOTHING wrong with that either) but it’s more about falling in love with the son of the crime family your family has been enemies with for years or trying to save your sibling’s life so you become the “property” of some unhinged menace. For me, it’s all about how the characters ended up in this crazy situation and how they’ll get to the other side all while managing to find the love of their life. An adrenaline rush in book form.

My intro into the genre has led me down a deep rabbit hole of uncovering amazing authors, unhinged lunatics, and some of the most beautiful love stories. While exploring the genre I uncovered so many new-to-me authors and became kind of overwhelmed. I decided to reach out to the BookTok community and ask them which Urban Romance authors every reader should check out. The response was impressive! I received recommendations for over 65 authors (some of which weren’t Urban Romance writers) and after some light research, I pared the list down to 36.

Before I list the recommended authors, let’s take a step back.

    What is Urban Romance?

    Ok, this can be divisive.

For historical context, the genre of Romance dates back to the 1700s and according to Romance Writers of America, Romance has two basic elements: a central love story and an emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending. The genre of Urban Fiction got its start in the late 1990s and early 2000s and is a gritty, dramatic, and fast-paced genre set in cities that usually focuses on socio-economic realities and street culture.

In my experience, there is no standard, agreed-upon definition for Urban Romance and oftentimes, Black Romance, Urban Romance, Urban Fiction, and Street Lit are used interchangeably. I like to think of Urban Romance as Black Romance and Urban Fiction having a baby. Therefore, to me, Urban Romance is a story set in an urban setting where there may be criminal or morally grey activity occurring and romance is a part of the main plot. Urban Romance usually involves street/crime drama, underground economies, survival or loyalty themes, kingpins, hustlers, or crime bosses, tragedy, high drama and intensity, and fast-paced plots. Through all of that, Black leads and love remains at the forefront.

Now back to the matter at hand, with the help of my BookTok community back in 2025, we curated a list of 36 Urban Romance Authors that every lover of the genre should check out. While this list represents old-school and new-school Urban Romance writers, all of them have a strong body of work.

Urban Romance Authors You Should Know

Regardless of where your reading journey takes you, the genre of Urban Romance is extensive and there are so many authors you should give a try while exploring it. Out of the 36 authors mentioned, I still have 9 authors to check out. And not too much on me - I am slowly making my way through this list because this is my happy place and not a race. Which author(s) will you be adding to your TBR?
